May 1885 On 13 May 1885, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen of Ridderkerk granted permission to Mr. Johann Hendrik van Cappellen to establish a 'Factory for Steam and other Machines' in Bolnes . He started with a simple foundry and soon supplied bollards, safes and mooring clamps. The foundry was expanded and a machine factory was added. This was followed by the production of steering gear and hand winches for Rhine lighters and for the yards, punching machines, shears and bending pliers.
