Brons

Brons — the Appingedammer Bronsmotorenfabriek (Appingedam, Groningen) — was a Dutch maker of stationary and marine **internal-combustion engines** from 1907 to the 2000s. Jan Brons (1865–1954) invented the pre-chamber "vaporizing-cup" diesel, and the firm built over **4,000 engines** for ships, barges, tugs and stationary service worldwide.<ref name="brons" /><ref name="bronswp" />

History and lineage

  • 1890s — Jan Brons (Wagenborgen), a carpenter, builds paraffin (petrol) engines; turns to the diesel principle.<ref name="brons" />
  • 1904 — German patent on the **Brons pre-chamber "vaporizing/spraying-cup" injector**, which eliminated the diesel fuel/air-pump problems of the era.<ref name="brons" />
  • 1907 — the factory at **Appingedam** is built.<ref name="brons" /><ref name="bronswp" />
  • 1911 — own foundry opened.<ref name="brons" />
  • 1920 — ~95% of stationary-engine production is exported.<ref name="brons" />
  • 1927 — conventional **direct-injection two- and four-stroke** engines added (besides the
 pre-chamber range).<ref name="brons" />
  • 1946 — last pre-chamber (vaporizing-cup) engine.<ref name="brons" />
  • 1960s–1989 — licences / joint work with **Stork, MAN and DAF**; engines up to ~3,200 hp by
1976. Engine production continued until ~1989, when the firm was taken over by the American
Waukesha engine division; parts sales closed 10 December 2004.<ref name="brons" />

A worldwide **licence system** spread the system: ~39 factories built Brons / Brons-Hvid engines (Hvid = the Danish licensee; linked to Ransomes).<ref name="brons" />

Engine types

Family Cycle Bore/stroke Cyl. Power Speed Years
Original / C / D / T 2- or 4-stroke — — per family — 1907–
EA(T), ED, GB, GV, TD 2- or 4-stroke — — up to 3,200 hp — 1920s–1946
Example: 8-cyl ED 4-stroke — 8 500 hp — barge *Limburgia*

(Per-family bore/stroke/power: see the model datasheets at `bronsmotor.com` — to be completed per family.)

Applications

Stationary engines, marine (barges, tugs, fishing vessels); the pre-chamber range dominated Dutch inland and marine use through the first half of the 20th century.<ref name="brons" />
